I am Dr. Akiko Matsumoto, a piano technician with over 30 years of experience. My journey began at the prestigious Yamaha Piano Technical Academy, from which I graduated in 1990. In 1994, I moved to New York and have since worked with Steinway as a senior A-level piano technician, serving clients including concert pianists. I have also been a concert technician for the Manhattan School of Music and ProPiano concert rental services. In addition, I pursued advanced studies in music education, acoustics, music psychology, interactive technology, and cognitive science, earning a B.M.T. and M.P.S. from New York University and an Ed.D. from Teachers College, Columbia University. I am now the owner of NY Piano Tech LLC.
I have earned a strong reputation for the precision and quality of my work in piano voicing, regulation, and concert-level tuning. I am also known for my ability to customize each piano to suit the specific needs and preferences of the pianist, a skill that has been praised by teachers, students, and performers alike. I take pride in being attentive to both the piano and its owner, always listening carefully to their needs. I regularly prepare concert pianos for venues such as Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the Blue Note. While Steinway Hall's retail piano aftercare service is no longer available, I will continue to collaborate with the Steinway factory, parts department, restoration team, and sales representatives to ensure the highest level of service.
I assure you that I will provide the same, if not better, service for your piano. I offer flexible scheduling, including weekend and evening appointments, to meet your needs.
